Limb Lengthening Methods

Different Methods.
One Goal.
The Right Approach for You.

Limb lengthening can be performed using different surgical systems. Each method has its own advantages, limitations and recovery considerations.

Understanding these differences is the first step toward choosing the right approach for your journey.

Compare the Methods

Understand the Difference. Choose With Confidence.

Each limb lengthening method approaches the same goal differently. The main differences are the implant system, external fixation, weight-bearing capacity and overall treatment experience.

Combines stability and versatility.

LON

Lengthening Over Nail

  • Internal nail + external fixator
  • External fixation during lengthening
  • Earlier weight-bearing potential
  • External fixator removal surgery required

Fully internal. Simply advanced.

Fitbone

Fully Internal System

  • Fully internal nail
  • No external fixator
  • Controlled internal lengthening
  • Weight-bearing restrictions during recovery

Precision through innovation.

Precice

Magnetic Internal System

  • Fully internal nail
  • Magnetic lengthening technology
  • No external fixator
  • Weight-bearing restrictions during recovery

There is no single “best” method.
The right choice depends on the patient.

Method 01 — LON

A Proven Approach.
Built for Stability.

LON combines an internal intramedullary nail with an external fixator during the lengthening phase.

The external fixator provides stability while gradual lengthening takes place. After the desired length is achieved, the external fixator is removed while the internal nail remains in place to support the bone during healing.

  • Internal + External SystemIntramedullary nail combined with an external fixator.
  • Weight BearingAllows greater weight-bearing potential compared with fully internal systems.
  • External FixationThe external fixator remains in place throughout the lengthening phase.
  • Second ProcedureA procedure is required to remove the external fixator after lengthening.

Method 02 — Fitbone

Fully Internal.
Designed for Comfort.

Fitbone is a fully internal limb lengthening system designed to gradually lengthen the bone without the need for an external fixator.

The motorized intramedullary nail performs controlled lengthening while remaining completely inside the limb, offering a different treatment experience compared with external fixation methods.

  • Fully Internal SystemThe lengthening nail remains entirely inside the bone.
  • No External FixatorNo external frame is required during the lengthening process.
  • Controlled LengtheningGradual and controlled distraction using the internal motorized system.
  • Weight-Bearing RestrictionsWeight bearing is limited during lengthening and early bone healing.

Internal technology.
A more comfortable lengthening experience.

Method 03 — Precice

Precision Controlled.
Fully Internal.

Precice is a fully internal limb lengthening system that uses magnetic technology to gradually and precisely lengthen the bone.

An external remote controller activates the mechanism inside the intramedullary nail, allowing controlled distraction without the need for an external fixator.

  • Fully Internal SystemThe lengthening nail remains entirely inside the bone.
  • Magnetic TechnologyThe nail is activated using an external remote controller.
  • Controlled LengtheningGradual lengthening can be precisely managed throughout the distraction phase.
  • Weight-Bearing RestrictionsWeight bearing is limited during lengthening and early bone healing.

Magnetic technology.

Choosing Your Method

The Right Method
Starts With the Right Plan.

There is no single limb lengthening method that is right for everyone.

Your anatomy, height goals, lifestyle, preferred treatment experience and recovery expectations all play a role in determining the most appropriate approach.

  • Your GoalsHow much height you want to gain.
  • Your AnatomyBone structure and individual physical characteristics.
  • Your LifestyleMobility needs and expectations during the process.
  • Your RecoveryThe rehabilitation demands and recovery experience of each method.

The goal isn't to choose the most advanced method.
It's to choose the right method for you.
